Matthew 1:18-25

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus.

Anna gave birth to three more children, one of which died at age four with dreaded pneumonia. In August 1881, the Spaffords moved to Jerusalem. Mr. Spafford died and is buried in that city.

Opening Words
Disappointment or failure is not what any of us wants to face in life but it sometimes comes when we least expected it. When we are undertaking a big project in particular and expectations are high, all things have been done sequentially to have the best outcome, it disappointment comes, it could be very devastating and if care is not taken, it could Mark the end of the project. That was the experience of Joseph and he wanted to call it quit. His first reaction was human but divine power intervened and grace came to bear the disappointment which later turned to praise.

Pragmatic Way of Handling Failures

1. God will Change the Natural Law on your Behalf
Thank God for your Failure.
1Thessalonians 5: 18
In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
Everything here includes our seeming failure.

See Failure as Part and Parcel of Success.
Don’t See Failure as Irredeemable Setback.
Awareness that sometimes, disappointment is the beginning of success Story for Gods children. Why?
Romans 8: 28
And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
You need to know that failure or disappointment is part of life and can never be the end of God’s gracious hands in your life.
Learn your lessons from the disappointment.
You may need more humility, you may need to slow down a bit.
When you are disappointed by the failure of a promise, you must always fail forward.
This can happen when you allow your failure to be a motivation for you to reach your Goal.

2. Seek Out the Will of God through the Leading of the Spirit
Fail forward by learning your lessons from your disappointments. Ask the question, did I take any wrong step?
Is there anything I was supposed to do that I did not do?
Am I in the perfect will of God in this matter? God uses disappointment at times to prevent us from experiencing a disaster.
In the Air crash that occurred near Lagos about two or three years ago, somebody was supposed to travel from Abuja to Lagos that day but somehow missed the flight. That was the saving grace for him. Another was booked but they overbooked and a Chinese man who was befriending a Nigerian was allowed to board instead of him with his girlfriend. The man was very angry at that disappointment of not travelling with the rest but also, that was the way God decided to save his life. For every disappointment, you need to thank God. A politician called me and said he would want me to come and lead the service of thanksgiving for his failure in an election. God ministered to me that it is the best attitude to receive the best from the Lord.

3. Pray over your disappointment
Prayer is necessary because strength is needed for coping when disappointment comes.
Prayer is equally needed in order to remove the impediment that was on the way initially and that may still be on the way. Prayer is needed for the right direction so that the next step might be taken rightly.
When Israel failed in capturing Ai, Joshua went before the Lord in prayer and the Lord told him what went wrong.
When failure comes, we are usually in a low spirit, but prayer helps us in connecting our communication line back with God for hope and right direction.

4. Unshakeable Determination to reach your Goal
Be determined not to be a failure knowing that you are born to rule. Make the attempt again believing God . You have to confront your failure.
Remember that God made you a human being and he has put in you the potential to dominate and not to be dominated. The Bible says:

Genesis 1: 28
Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

In 1832, Abraham Lincoln was defeated for state legislator.

In 1833, Abraham Lincoln tried a new business, and failed.

In 1835, Abraham Lincoln’s fiancée died.

In 1836, Abraham Lincoln had a nervous breakdown.

In 1843, Abraham Lincoln ran for congress and was defeated.

In 1848, Lincoln ran again, and was defeated. Again.

In 1855, Lincoln ran for the Senate, and lost.

In 1856, Lincoln ran for Vice President, and lost.

In 1859, Lincoln ran again for the Senate. He was defeated.

Then, in 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States.

What matters most is not how many times you fail, but that you never stop trying.
